Position Overview:

The Back of House team works directly with the associate veterinarian(s) to provide medical support to patients and communicates closely with clients to create a treatment option that meets the needs of both the patient and their owner(s). Skilled at client education, they produce and explain estimates, answer medical questions, and help to ensure owners are confident in following any needed home-care instructions and follow-up. This is a close-knit and skilled team of people whose nursing skills are highly valued and utilized, relieving veterinarians of technical work and administrative details. Education, learning, goal-setting, and advancement is emphasized to ensure BOH staff have the opportunity to enjoy a high level of job satisfaction and to continue to build their career in veterinary medicine.

The BOH Assistant Manager is the primary support for the BOH Manager and works closely with medical staff and veterinarians. They support the BOH team by providing coaching/mentoring, training of new staff, and helping to navigate complex situations. The BOH Assistant Manager works with Assistant and Technician Leads to guide the daily flow, manage the wait list, and ensure daily tasks are completed in a timely manner. The majority of their time is spent on the floor assisting with procedures, tech or doctor appointments, and addressing client questions, prescription requests, and follow-ups. They work closely with the BOH manager to foster a positive and supportive learning environment.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum 5 years experience as veterinary technician or assistant
  • Leadership experience preferred
GENERAL:
  • Physical Effort: Requires lifting and carrying items weighing up to 40 lbs. Requires standing for extended periods of time.
  • Working Conditions: Will be exposed to and required to clean up animal feces, urine, blood, etc. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases. Will oversee decontamination of surfaces after potential exposures.
EDUCATION AND LICENSES:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Computer knowledge required (MAC, Word, typing, keyboarding, and email).
  • Good working knowledge of veterinary terminology, and ability to spell medical terms.
ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITES:
  • Present and active on the floor
  • Plays an active role in training and development of staff
  • Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other team members and employees.
  • Supervises patient care and ensures consistency and quality (e.g. ensuring inpatients have detailed flow sheets and treatments are completed in a timely manner)
  • Addresses Back of House emails and Rx emails promptly when at the desk, or assigns a lead to do so
  • Works closely with the BOH manager to improve efficiencies and update protocols as needed; helps to ensure any updates are communicated and adapted by BOH staff
  • Brings interpersonal or behavioral concerns regarding BOH staff to BOH manager directly; helps to enforce respect, privacy, and decorum among coworkers
  • Acts as a resource for team members needing assistance or an ear to listen
  • Works closely with BOH manager to encourage and maintain a workplace that is safe for both staff and patients; assists with restraint training or re-training as needed
  • Works with BOH manager to enforce and maintain a workplace free of the following: gossip, toxic behaviors and attitudes, intolerance, impatience, and bullying
  • Administrative duties and projects as assigned by the BOH Manager (e.g.controlled drug monitoring, schedule)
VETERINARY KNOWLEDGE:
  • Understands all common vaccinations and vaccination protocols and is able to communicate to clients when needed.
  • Understands common disease states and can alert veterinarians when symptoms change or when concerns arise with hospitalized patients.
  • Understands usage, dosage, and common side effects for commonly used prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the clients.
  • Is able to perform emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage.
  • Can perform clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draws blood for laboratory analysis; maintains file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded in patient records.
  • Is comfortable and knowledgeable when handling client’s medical questions with confidence and direct to veterinarians when appropriate.
  • Is able to explain necessary follow-up and home care instructions to clients.
  • Assists the veterinarian in medical, surgical and dental procedures; prepares patients for surgery; administers anesthesia; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids.
  • Can correctly place IV catheters and properly care for them. Understands the use and care of IV pumps as well.
  • Properly cares for all surgical materials; keeps the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
  • Radiographs - can effectively position patients and process.
WAGES AND BENEFITS:
  • Pay rate is hourly, with a starting range of $28-$34
