Music Teacher - Band, Elementary School (Full-Time, Probationary) The Scarsdale Union Free School District is seeking a talented, experienced, and innovative candidate for an elementary teaching position in instrumental band music. Scarsdale has five elementary schools spanning grades K-5. We offer rich and varied educational programs and are supported by an active and supportive parent community. Candidates must hold appropriate NY State Certification in Music (K-12) and have experience in elementary band music instruction. Knowledge of and background in beginning band pedagogy, repertoire, and performance are essential. Knowledge of and experience in elementary general music curriculum is beneficial. Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students and by creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

Essential Functions

  • Develops and administers culturally responsive music education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives for elementary instrumental band instruction
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to student learning in both large ensemble and smaller class settings
  • Participates in developing dynamic curricula in conjunction with district-wide music department colleagues
  • Demonstrates knowledge of current technologies including music software, web-based platforms, and apps used for general education needs
  • Develops lessons to organize class time so that students have adequate time for preparation, instruction, rehearsal, and reflection
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of students’ music learning and progress and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student needs including students with special needs
  • Conducts individual and small group instruction as needed
  • Utilizes repertoire of varied genres as appropriate to learning goals
  • Plans, coordinates rehearsals for, and directs students in musical programs and performances outside of the classroom
  • As a reflective practitioner, continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, and professional conferences and by conducting research when appropriate
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to ensure a productive learning atmosphere during class time, rehearsals, and performances
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members and participates in faculty meetings and committees
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate music supplies and music equipment, maintains inventory records, and ensures equipment is in good working order
Additional DutiesPerforms other related tasks as assigned by the principal and other central office administrators as designated by the superintendent

Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, and telephones

Travel Requirements

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of current music teaching methods and educational pedagogy
  • Ability to instruct students in instrumental band music and play appropriate band instruments
  • Ability to instruct students in music literacy that is aligned with the general music program in the building
  • Ability to instruct students in general music and play appropriate classroom instruments
  • Ability to prepare for two annual chorus concert performances
  • Ability to prepare for and help organize school assemblies when appropriate
  • Knowledge of differentiation in instruction based upon student learning styles
  • Knowledge of English grammar and mechanics, word usage, word denotations and connotations, literature, and other content areas taught
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work

Qualifications Profile

Certification/License: NY State Certification in Music (K-12)

Education

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in music, education, and/or related discipline applicable to this teaching assignment

Master's degree in related area preferred

Experience

Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade levels is beneficial.
