Lahore Resolution

  • The Lahore Resolution, also known as the Pakistan Resolution, was a political declaration adopted on March 23, 1940, at the annual session of the All-India Muslim League in Lahore, British India.
  • The resolution was presented by A.K. Fazlul Huq, the then Chief Minister of Bengal. It was seconded by Chaudhary Khaliq-uz-Zaman and passed by the Muslim League members present at the session.
  • The Lahore Resolution demanded the creation of an independent Muslim state comprising Muslim-majority areas in the northwestern and northeastern regions of British India. It called for the establishment of “independent states” for Muslims in these areas, which included present-day Pakistan, Bangladesh, and parts of India.
  • The Lahore Resolution was supported by all the prominent Muslim leaders of the time, including Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who later became the founder of Pakistan, Liaquat Ali Khan, Khawaja Nazimuddin, and Maulana Shaukat Ali.
  • The resolution was also supported by the Muslim League leaders from different provinces of British India, including Punjab, Sindh, NWFP (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Balochistan, and Bengal.
  • The Lahore Resolution was translated into English by Abdul Hashim Khurshid, a member of the Muslim League, and was then read out by the President of the session, Maulana Zafar Ali Khan.
  • The Lahore Resolution was adopted during the 27th annual session of the All-India Muslim League, which was held at Minto Park (now Iqbal Park) in Lahore from March 22-24, 1940.
  • The session was presided over by Maulana Zafar Ali Khan, a prominent Muslim scholar, journalist, and politician.
  • The Lahore Resolution marked a significant turning point in the history of the Indian subcontinent, as it paved the way for the creation of Pakistan as a separate homeland for Indian Muslims.
  • The Lahore Resolution was later officially adopted as the Pakistan Resolution at the Muslim League’s annual session in Karachi in 1941.
