The Principal Economic Advisor plays a key role in the Economic Insights team in the Strategic Policy and Insights (SPI) Division, providing data, evidence, economic analysis, and insights that support the development of policies and strategies to grow prosperity for all Queenslanders. This position is responsible for the application of economic theories and principles, data analytical tools and techniques, and the development of an economic narrative for a range of clients including the senior executive leadership team. The role is responsible for applying appropriate economic analytical tools and techniques to complex data sets and preparing detailed economic reports to inform the development of regional economic strategies, economic and industry policies, and programs.

The Economic Insights team is part of the SPI within the Strategy, Insights, and Advisory Group in the Department of State Development Local Government and Planning. SPI leads the development and analysis of future-focused, cross-departmental research to support whole-of-agency direction setting and policy formulation. In doing so, the team uses a mix of formal and informal approaches with an increasing focus on developing and nurturing stakeholder relationships, using data, evidence, and economic analysis and providing insights, and through research contributing to solutions to address key challenges facing the Queensland economy and Queensland communities. This position is responsible for the application of economic theories and principles, data analytical tools and techniques, and the development of an economic narrative for a range of clients including the senior executive leadership team.

Among other responsibilities, this role is responsible for working as a part of a team to apply vision and strategic foresight in leading complex reforms and direction setting through strategies supported by research and stakeholder engagement; undertaking strategic economic research and analysis on specified, multiple complex issues and initiatives at state, national and global levels to formulate pragmatic and meaningful advice which is delivered through briefings, policy papers, reports, Cabinet submissions, and presentations; contributing to the development and implementation of work programs, standardised tools and approaches for analysis and critical thinking, and the day-to-day operations of the division; supporting the Economic Insights team in undertaking economic research, data analysis and providing insights for intervention and innovative policy development; applying appropriate economic analytical tools and techniques to complex data sets and prepare detailed economic reports to inform the development of regional economic strategies, economic and industry policies, and programs; undertaking and reviewing Cost-Benefit Analysis to inform the decisions regarding economic development policies, major projects, and significant investment proposals; preparing timely economic intelligence reports on the Queensland economy, regions, and industries to support the Departmental priorities; and developing and maintain strategic networks and consultative relationships within the Department, across government, and with key stakeholders.
