The Controller position is a permanent opportunity in the Newmarket, Ontario region. Planning and directing all accounting operational functions, handling the accumulation and consolidation of financial data for internal and external financial statements, evaluating accounting and internal control systems, and leading a small clerical team will be essential for this role. In this role, it will be critical for you to effectively manage self and others within strict time constraints when providing client services, lead while also being a team player, generate innovative ideas, and challenge the status quo. Major responsibilities

  • This is a hands on role that oversees the activities of the accounting department, including accounts payable, billings & collections, and payroll
  • Produce cash-flow reports, calculating cash needs at weekly and monthly intervals, and manage daily cash
  • Time monthly billing and other cash management techniques to make sure cash collection is punctual
  • Ensure client satisfaction by reviewing deliverables of self and team
  • Work closely with the entire leadership team to facilitate efficient and effective firm-wide operation
  • Assess, execute and streamline policies, procedures, controls and most methodologies
  • Handle monthly and annual close of income statement and balance sheet, account reconciliations & G/L analysis
  • Manage the creation of and monthly monitoring of the annual budget and forecasts
  • Act on items beyond formal job responsibilities
  • Lead Finance Department initiatives, such as software and systems implementation and other departmental or firm-wide improvements, with research, planning, and implementation, as required
  • Produce financial reports to executive committee monthly
Requirements
  • CPA designation is required.
  • Progressive accounting experience, including as a Controller for Small and Medium Sized Businesses or Small Business Units of Larger Organizations is required.
  • Recent experience working in a Small or Medium Sized Business where you were both hands on and strategic at the same time is a must have skill set.
  • Prior experience assisting companies go through significant growth is a critical skill set.
  • Prior experience overseeing and setting controls for a significant inventory is important.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects within strict deadlines
  • Prior experience in a public accounting environment is highly valued
  • Proven analytical skills - defining problems, collecting relevant data, drawing valid conclusions, and recommending improvement/corrective actions
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, high pressure environment, to prioritize deals and adapt to quick changes while remaining diligent
  • High attention to detail
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Accounting Software Systems ie. QuickBooks, Xero etc.
  • Quality experience with Budget Processes
  • Skilled in the construction and delivery of effective presentations to audiences with wide-ranging backgrounds
