The Lower School Visual Arts Teacher has responsibility for designing significant learning experiences in studio art, art history, and art appreciation for select elementary grades. They are expected to understand and demonstrate effective student instruction and assessment to maximize educational achievement for all students. They will work collaboratively to ensure a working and learning climate for all students that is safe, secure, and respectful. They will be an integral part of Latin’s Visual Arts Department.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a strategic planning system including course, unit, and lesson plans based on the Charlotte Latin Visual Arts curriculum’s scope and sequence.
  • Demonstrate an understanding and mastery of central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structure of the visual arts, effectively transmitting this knowledge to students, and making the subject matter meaningful to students.
  • Work in and provide instruction in a variety of mediums such as watercolor, graphite, acrylic, collage, clay, pastel, and graphite.
  • Engage every student in grade level appropriate learning experiences that promote artistic, intellectual, and moral development.
  • Use formal and informal assessment strategies to determine whether students have achieved high standards; modify instructional strategies as needed to maximize achievement.
  • Use appropriate technology in teaching and learning processes.
  • Develop a climate and culture of openness, fairness, mutual respect, kindness, support and inquiry.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to independent education and the vision, mission, and philosophy of the school; and consistently developing, fostering, and advancing our core values in students.
  • Listen and interact effectively with students, parents, colleagues, leadership, and community members to support student learning and well-being
  • Model and reinforce good judgment and responsibility
  • Establish and maintain a safe and secure classroom environment.
  • Manage student misconduct promptly and resolve conflict and crises effectively
  • Maintain a professional development plan and engage in professional development activities
  • Prepare and order supplies for classroom setup and learning objectives;Inventory and monitor of supplies as needed.
  • Moderate an arts-related extracurricular club or activity.
  • Maintain the mounting for all grade levels taught and coordinate with the Lower School Division for displays.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a team with flexibility and innovation.
  • Performing other related duties as required.
Supervisory ResponsibilitiesEducation And ExperienceThe Lower School Visual Arts Teacher shall be a person who is well-organized, well-rounded, engaging, and who has the ability to interact joyfully with students, parents, and colleagues. Additionally, strong candidates will possess:
  • Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Art Education or a related field; Master’s preferred
  • A minimum of 3 years experience as an art teacher.
  • Completed a personal portfolio showing a wide range of skills with a variety of techniques.
