About the Role:

This opportunity is for current students looking for work experience in Fall 2024 (September - December).

As a Product Management Associate, you are responsible for assisting in discovering, investigating, and building prototypes for new ideas that will turn into ventures that elevate human potential through applied AI.

Build products with AltaML’s Venture Studio!AltaML’s Venture Studio helps founders and startups fast-track their journey from zero to one by providing technical expertise, managing operational details, and incorporating insights from our corporate labs to deliver innovative applied AI products.

Here, the product team is responsible for launching brand-new AI products. This involves the rigorous process of vetting new ideas by evaluating their potential impact on the world and their feasibility of becoming a viable business.

An important part of this process includes understanding the target customer and their pains. You will help us learn what potential customers are trying to do, why they do it, and how we can help them make significant improvements. If you have a strong desire to take ideas from 0 to 1, through starting a business, social enterprise, or another means of making an impact, this is the role for you!

Office as a Resource & Participating Universities: This opportunity is currently open to anyone that is currently enrolled at the U of Alberta, U of Calgary (Masters Only), Mount Royal U, U Waterloo, U of Toronto, or Queens U. As this is a Mitacs funded opportunity, please reach out if you have questions regarding your eligibility. While we have offices in Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, and Waterloo we use our offices as a resource as this is a hybrid opportunity.

What You'll Do:

  • Conduct creative prospecting to reach customers in new markets through targeted calls and emails, and other outreach activities to set up discovery interviews, demos, and pilot programs
  • Conduct user discovery interviews with potential customers to uncover essential insights, validating problems and opportunities that inform our product development
  • Collaborate with our software and machine learning developers to determine the feasibility of the proposed ideas
  • Identify opportunities to integrate machine learning to solve complex problems and deliver unique market differentiation
  • Map out a clear product roadmap for building prototypes with Must-Have and Nice-to-Have features for our ventures based on the insights received from the discovery interviews and technical team.
  • Identify and engage pilot customers to test product prototypes
  • Create and test hypotheses with the prototype to validate the product’s value proposition, business viability, technical feasibility, and usability
  • Collaborate closely with the dev team, customers, and other key stakeholders to deliver the most valuable features
  • Define and refine the Go-to-Market (GTM) strategy, ensuring it aligns with customer insights and business objectives.
  • Conduct thorough research on competitors to understand the market landscape to position the product effectively
  • Develop compelling pitch decks and presentations to communicate the product’s value to stakeholders and potential partners
  • Help us develop the best process for evaluating ideas and growing them into products. This involves humbly listening to data, recognizing the team’s strengths and weaknesses, embracing failures, and brainstorming ways to continue to improve
What You Bring:
  • You are working towards a career in business development, technical sales, or product management: you may be pursuing a degree in business, marketing, or a more technical degree (CS, Engineering, Data Science) with a strong interest in how your work delivers value to customers.
  • You possess confident, clear, and concise communication abilities.
  • You have experience or the aptitude for professional interactions, including with executive-level customers.
  • You have a proven track record of entrepreneurial activities, showing initiative, innovation, and a capacity to think outside the box. Your experiences in launching or leading projects or ventures are highly regarded
  • Your ability to work effectively in diverse teams, understanding and integrating different perspectives is crucial.
Bonus Points:
  • Knowledge of machine learning / AI
  • Knowledge of additional functional areas such as Engineering, Sales, UX/UI, Customer Support, Marketing, or Finance
