Social Worker – Council for Children’s Rights

The Council for Children's Rights is seeking to hire a full-time Social Worker to join its Children's Defense Team. The Social Worker will work directly with the Children's Defense Team attorneys who represent children in both delinquency and mental health matters in Mecklenburg County District Court. The Social Worker must complete tasks that align with the child's expressed interest and the child's case as directed by the assigned attorney. All positions, including this Social Worker position, on the Children's Defense Team require a minimum monthly billing requirement for compliance under a state contract.

Responsibilities, Including But Not Limited To

  • Work with team attorneys to represent the expressed interest of all children who are either facing delinquency charges in Mecklenburg County Juvenile Court or who have been placed in a mental health facility.
  • Handle cases as distributed by the Director of Children's Defense; the percentage of time allocated between delinquency and mental health court will be guided by billable requirements under a state contract and the cases where a child is presenting with the highest level of need.
  • Make recommendations to the assigned attorney about community programs, placement, treatment, Medicaid, or educational issues.
  • Complete safety plans, when appropriate, for children in need.
  • Contact respite placements to determine availability.
  • Attend Child & Family Team meetings, school meetings, and court hearings to advocate and provide updates.
  • Assist families in the process of obtaining Medicaid.
  • Learn about new community programs that can benefit the child-clients.
  • Conduct home visits and contact the child, parent/guardian, and other professionals when necessary.
  • Collaborate with professionals to advance cases and knowledge about community programs.
  • Maintain highly detailed notes and record keeping in the Council for Children's Rights database and adhere to the monthly billable requirement.
  • Be prompt and professional in all communications in and out of court.
  • Adhere to all Council for Children's Rights policies and procedures and attend staff meetings.
  • Active participation in the creation of and completion of data outcomes and goals for the children served; support provided by the Director of Impact and Policy
  • Contribute to the philanthropic activities of the organization, including but not limited to attendance at annual fundraising events and drafting of client stories.
  • Other duties and responsibilities, as needed.
Qualifications
  • Possess a Master of Social Work degree.
  • Minimum three years of post-M.S.W. experience; or equivalent and transferable experience.
  • Substantial experience working in Juvenile Court; preference given to those with experience in delinquency court.
  • Substantial experience working with children that have a mental health diagnosis and/or have received mental health treatment.
  • Commitment to social, legal, and economic equity and justice, especially for children and other historically excluded and marginalized populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with children of all ages.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated; Ability to set priorities and manage workloads with minimal supervision.
  • Highly professional and strong commitment to the ethics of social work.
  • Committed to being a billable employee.
  • Commitment to being supervised by an attorney.
